Handwriting Improvement Program
Handwriting skills help your student
- Build skills to communicate confidently and effectively.
- Develop hand strength, visual motor coordination/integration.
- Build self-confidence and expressive abilityHandwriting is the great “equalizer in society,” said Jan Olsen, the founder and developer of Learning Without Tears. “With a pencil and a piece of paper, [children] who can write can get their homework done, and they can do it in any situation.”Handwriting without Tears program specifically takes complicated things and breaks them down into small elemental parts which help students learn foundational skills without frustration!
Unbridled Rehab offers the Handwriting Improvement Program (HIP) for either 1:1 needs or small group treatment environments using Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. HWT is a multi-sensory approach using developmentally appropriate sequence and instruction for all learning styles. HWT offers strategies to correct errors such as letter/number reversals, poor spacing, inappropriate letter size, and more for those having difficulty with handwriting. HIP is available to all ages Pre-K through transitioning teens. A HWT prepared and certified therapist is available for consult.
HIP is a 6-week program, 1 hour per week, where an occupational therapist will screen students for both strengths and needs. Participation in HIP will build the student’s confidence in the classroom and during homework activities. The therapist facilitating HIP will assess the student’s grasp, type of utensil used, and positioning, while also teaching the foundations of print or cursive using a developmental sequence, consistent with language promoting, visual, and proprioceptive sensory systems. The weekly practice sessions are packed with multi-sensory tools promoting handwriting speed and fluency that make handwriting fun! Enrollment includes one HWT training book per student.
